Fabled to have been founded by Hercules himself, Herculaneum is located 7 kilometres to the West of Mount Vesuvius and is much smaller than Pompeii, spanning across approximately 320m² with a population of 4,000-5,000. However, much less of Herculaneum has been uncovered as of today, about it's actual size is still unknown.
Herculaneum was like a sea-side resort for wealthy Romans, boasting a number of large villas as well as a luxury hotel with beautiful sea views and access. Because of this, much of what has been uncovered at Herculaneum is rich with decoration and provides a representation on how the upper-class of Roman civilization lived.
